While in Japan, it was considered normal to eat hamburgers on the beach. But some fishermen in Okinawa complained at their fishing and other places. One fisherman asked how many people ate hamburgers on the beach at the same time all month. "My father would come and give it to me and say, hey, go eat it, I'm in a job and I want to get rid of those guys who keep eating them," recalled a fisherman who was eating hamburgers on the beach in 2014. "He was so angry."

Another fisherman, who does not want to be named, said he had been at the beach every year since 1983 with his two girls and four children. In all, he got his own burger. "Sometimes I'd go and see them, we'd eat them too," he said of the men who followed him.

"When a new man comes he goes down there eating their burger, it was very cool to know they'd not be there with no hamburgers either."
